Gefallen,  our Fries ancestors that gave their lives in the many German Wars. listed chronologically by DoD

The Baden Wars.

The German state of Baden Württemberg had its share of battles and wars. One of our ancestors, my Fries generation's 7th great grandmother, Anna Maria Geßner, 4-17-1638--10-21-1681, was killed in one of the Baden Wars. When the Thirty Years War ended in 1648, the population of the German state of Baden had been reduced from 450,000 to 166,000. Eventually, the estimated final immigration from Baden to America was 600,000 people. The total number of German immigrants to America reached six million people.

The US Civil War

During the Civil War, my generation's great grandfather, Konradus Fries was a private in Company B, 149th Illinois Infantry. He listed Belleville as his place of residence on enlistment. His unit appears to have had the duty of guarding railroad trains during the eleven months he spent in the Union Army. Illinois sent over 4,500 men to fight in the Civil War. Konradus was mustered out on January 27, 1866, at Dalton, Georgia. Dalton is a small town in northwest Georgia about 80 miles north of Atlanta.

The 149th Regiment Infantry was organized and mustered in, February 21, 1865, at Camp Butler, IL. It moved to Nashville, TN. early in 1865 and then on to Tullahoma, TN. The 149th was attached to the 1st Brigade, Defenses Nashville & Chattanooga R.R. They then proceeded to the Dalton, GA area, where the 149th was fighting (or guarding against) the famous Confederate General, Joe Johnston. The  149th was assigned by Major General Steadman to duty guarding railroads. On May 1st, was assigned to Colonel Felix Prince Salm’s Second Brigade, Second Separate Division, Army of the Cumberland, and on May 2nd, moved to Dalton, GA. On July 6, moved to Atlanta. On the 26th, being assigned to duty in the Fourth Sub-District of District of Allatoona, it was assigned to guard duty in that District. Mustered out January 27, 1866, at Dalton, GA., and ordered to Springfield, IL, where it received final payment and discharge.  The 149th lost 2 enlisted men in battle and 1 officer and 70 enlisted men from disease. The 149th was dissolved on January 27, 1866. They then moved back to Springfield, Illinois for final discharge.

Konradus Fries, 31 years old at this time, was five foot six, 135 pounds, and had red hair and gray eyes. He received $6.00 per month pension after the war. Three years later in 1868, he married Barbara Lucash.
